Pitting Corrosion
A highly localized form of corrosion that creates small holes or pits in the passive film of stainless steel, typically initiated by chloride ions in the presence of an oxidizing environment.
Pitting Corrosion
Pitting is one of the most destructive forms of corrosion because it concentrates the attack in a very small area, leading to rapid penetration. It is initiated when chloride ions break down the passive chromium oxide film at vulnerable spots.
Resistance Factors
- Higher PREN = better pitting resistance
- Molybdenum is the most effective element
- Nitrogen enhances resistance
- Surface finish affects initiation
